It was a super weekend at the box office. As the Boss rocked the Halftime Show, Liam Neeson rolled over the competition with the hostage thriller Taken earning an estimated $24.6 million.
Meanwhile, fellow newcomers The Uninvited and New in Town fumbled in their debuts with the horror remake Uninvited opening behind last week’s chart-topper Paul Blart: Mall Cop with $10 million and the Renee Zellweger-Harry Connick Jr. romcom landing in eighth with $6.8 million.
In second place, Blart added another $14 million to its $83 million cumulative total with the family film Hotel for Dogs slipping to fourth place with $8.71 million.
Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino is getting better with age as it rounded out the top five with $8.6 million in its second month in theaters. Its cumulative gross now stands at a cool $110 million.
Last week’s second place finisher Underworld: Rise of the Lycans failed to score with audiences this go-around, falling 65% to the seventh spot with $7.2 million.
Rapper biopic Notorious stumbled even further, 71% in its third week in release, adding $1.7 million to its not-so-biggie, small $35 million gross. Still, it was another “up” weekend as this week’s top earners performed 8% better than the same time last year when tween queen Hanna Montana ruled the box office.
