The Wild Things are at #1

Despite “families with children” making up only 27% of audiences who went to see WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE over this past weekend, the film bee-lined it into first place with close to $33M in its first weekend of release. According to Yahoo Movies, 43% of its audiences were made up of adults 18 years+, and even though the film garnered some negative reviews citing its dark tones and slim narrative, the film still managed to beat out 2 new releases, as well as the wider release of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY.

Unfortunately for WILD THINGS, folks were mostly still discussing the ultra low-budget horror film this past weekend, as its “wide release” jacked the film from 157 to 760 theaters, and earned it another $20M, taking its total to $33M, despite still being in about 1/4 of the theaters as most “major releases” (for example, WILD THINGS opened in over 3,700 theaters this past weekend). To that end, PARANORMAL scored yet another massive victory in terms of its average gross per theater count with $26,000 as its average, compared to WILD THINGS’ $8,000 average. PARANORMAL will be widening to over 1,800 theaters next weekend. Hoo-boy.

The weekend’s second big release, LAW ABIDING CITIZEN, also scored a decent opening in 2nd place with over $21M, which just scraped past PARANORMAL in 3rd place. The tepid remake of THE STEPFATHER opened in 5th place with about $12M. The 3 films that got knocked out of the top 10 this weekend included WHIP IT ($11M), CAPITALISM: A LOVE STORY ($11M) and FAME ($22M).

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF A SEQUEL held strongly in its 5th week of release, losing the least amount of its audience from last weekend (-29%), while busting through the $100M mark overall. ZOMBIELAND also kept kicking ass in its 3rd week of release, while punching its way through the $60M mark overall.
