Madea tops the box-office…again!

I’ve never seen one Tyler Perry movie (they just don’t appeal to me), but apparently they appeal to a bunch of other people as the prolific writer/director/actor scored his 2nd #1 movie opening of the year (after MADEA GOES TO JAIL opened with $41M back in February) as I CAN DO BAD BY MYSELF managed to beat out the 4 other new films this weekend, with a #1 score of $24M. The highly-marketed 9 only managed a 2nd place showing with about $11M.

The weekend’s two other new movies didn’t fare as well as SORORITY ROW and WHITEOUT managed 6th and 7th place openings respectively, with about $5M each. The 4 films that were bounced from the top 10 this week included GI JOE ($144M), THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE ($59M), HALLOWEEN 2 ($30M) and EXTRACT ($9M), in only its second week of release.

In the meantime, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS continued to pump up its box-office figures with another $7M added to its total, which is now close to $105M (only $3M away from Tarantino’s personal box-office record of $108M for PULP FICTION). THE FINAL DESTINATION also dropped to 5th place after two weeks at the top spot, but has now become the highest grossing FINAL DESTINATION movie of all-time ($58M). Something tells me this might not have been the FINAL DESTINATION after all.

The biggest drop in the top 10 came courtesy of GAMER, which went from 4th to 10th place, and lost about 66% of its audience from last week’s opening. DISTRICT 9, on the other hand, is still hanging around the top 10 after 5 weeks of release, and is closing in on the $110M mark (the film only cost about $30M to make).
