3-D horror still works…!

The battle of the horror movie franchises took place this past weekend and it appears as though the one featuring 3D action was the big “winner” as THE FINAL DESTINATION made about $11M more than Rob Zombie’s latest return to an established franchise that he apparently wants to “make his own” (yawn). Neither film was a hit with critics of course (the day film critics start enjoying horror movies is the day I start eating my shoes), but teens with green decided that they’d rather spend their hard-earned bucks on the 3D adventure ride this past weekend, rather than the latest killing spree by Michael Myers.

And speaking of Mike Myers, last week’s #1 movie, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, managed to lose only about 48% of its audience from last weekend, and stood strong in 2nd place. BASTERDS has already made $73M in the first 10 days of its release (it apparently cost about $70M to produce) and can already be considered a much-needed “hit” for the Weinstein Company. H2 opened in 3rd place, about $10M behind last year’s “original remake” HALLOWEEN launch, which had managed to squeeze $26M out of the younger generation during its opening weekend at the time.

It was nice to see the top 5 at the box-office this weekend be represented by “genre” movies though…that’s a rarity! That said, the 2 films which lost the least amount of their audience from last weekend was JULIE & JULIA, yet another Meryl Streep picture that seems to have major legs (after THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA and MAMMA MIA!), which lost only 19% of its audience from last weekend, and THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE, which lost only 30%. I guess genre pictures are hot right now, but ze ladies are also looking for “movie action” for them as well.

TAKING WOODSTOCK also opened with a decent showing in 9th place, considering that it only opened in about 1,300 theaters. The 2 films to get booted from the top 10 this week were HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE, with its total of $294M placing it as the 2nd highest grossing movie of 2009, and THE UGLY TRUTH, the mediocre rom-com which somehow made $85M during its run.
