Sacha Baron Cohen’s follow-up to the surprise success that was BORAT back in 2006 entitled BRUNO also managed to open at #1 with $30M in its opening weekend, compared to BORAT’s $9M opening. That said, BRUNO opened huge on Friday with about half of its total coming on that day ($14M). Most films usually make more on Saturday, but BRUNO only made about $9M on Saturday and even less on Sunday.
The drop-offs may indicate a trend for the film, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens on that front next week. BORAT obviously started slow, but gained crazy word-of-mouth, finishing with about $128M in all. Not sure if BRUNO will hit that total amount, but either way, the film is profitable since it didn’t cost too much to produce.
The #1 movie for the past 2 weeks, TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN, dropped to third place this weekend, but is now close to $340M overall. That makes it the #1 highest-grossing movie of the year, but also the 16th highest grossing film….of all-time!!! (already!) If it hits the illustrious $400M mark, it will move into 9th place of all-time, right behind the original SPIDER-MAN movie. Wow.
The 3rd ICE AGE flick also continued to post strong figures, as it remained in second place for the second week in a row, while raising its total to $120M, which seems to indicate that it will gross more than its two predecessors when all is said and done (ICE AGE ($176M) and ICE AGE 2 ($195M). THE HANGOVER is now the 4th highest grossing film of 2009, as it moved past the $220M mark last weekend, while PUBLIC ENEMIES held on pretty decently after its release last week, while raising its total closer to the $70M mark.
The week’s one other new release was the Hayden Panettiere comedy I LOVE YOU BETH COOPER, which opened pretty badly in 7th place with only $5M in receipts. UP continued to secure its place as the 2nd highest grossing film of the year, while lapping up another $5M in its 7th week of release. YEAR ONE ($41M) and NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 2 ($171M) both got pushed out of the top 10 this week.
