Tom Hanks did way better at the box office than his recent stint on SNL’s “Celebrity Jeopardy” as audiences summoned Angels & Demons to the tune of $48 million this weekend.
Meanwhile, Star Trek’s hot streak continued, beaming up an additional $43 million. Hanks’ return as Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon in Ron Howard’s prequel was no Da Vinci Code, which debuted with $77.1 million in 2006, but pulled in a healthy $104.3 million internationally. Star Trek’s cumulative gross currently stands at a mind-melding $147.6 million, just a whisker behind Wolverine’s $151 million total.
The X-Men spin-off pulled in $14.8 million in its third week of release as the Ebenezer Scrooge-inspired romcom Ghosts of Girlfriends Past earned $6.8 million ahead of the Alex Forrest-inspired thriller Obsessed, which rounded out the top five with $4.6 million.
The indie crime comedy The Brothers Bloom averaged $20,500 in its limited debut, behind the French independent drama Summer Hours featuring Juliette Binoche, which averaged $23,500 per screen in its opening weekend.
The Jennifer Aniston comedy Management failed to drum up much business in its limited premiere, averaging $1,785 per screen in just over 200 theaters. Overall, this week’s top earners managed to outdo ticket sales from a year ago at the same time by 5%.
