New Moon rising!

We all knew that NEW MOON was going to be the #1 movie this weekend at the box-office but the question was just how much it would earn and what records it would break. Well the teen-powered vampire/werewolf saga brought in an estimated $140.7 million this weekend to make it the second best opening weekend in history (behind THE DARK KNIGHT, which brought in $158.4 million back in the summer of 2008). The movie also set records for the best midnight gross ever ($26.3 million) and the best first day gross (a total of $72.7 million on Friday). So with all the frantic Twihards flooding the movie theaters this weekend, you might think that everyone else would stay home and not want to fight the crowds, but it was a surprisingly strong week. Audiences pay to see world end!

Looks like audiences were ready to see the world get mashed up by director Roland Emmerich again, as 2012 blasted into the top spot with $65M in its first three days of release alone. The film managed to make $225M worldwide in that same period, and had the 2nd highest opening for a “disaster movie” since Emmerich’s own THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW opened with $69M back in 2004 (see the full list of top “disaster movie” openings HERE — to note, Emmerich directed 4 of the top 5).
