Tarantino remains geek king!
Finally!! A Tarantino movie that is a “hit” with critics and the movie-going public (at least in terms of its opening) QT’s latest film entitled INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS generated close to $38M in its first 3 days of release in North America, making it the Los Angeles-based director’s biggest opening ever! (his previous biggest launch was KILL BILL: VOLUME 2 in 2004 with $25M). BASTERDS added an additional $28M overseas increasing its grand total to $65M for its worldwide opening weekend. For a film that only cost $30M to make, DISTRICT 9 kicked plenty of ass during its first weekend of release, with $37M in grosses in domestic dollars alone. The film, which was produced by LOTR guru Peter Jackson and directed by first-time feature helmer Neill Blomkamp (born in South Africa, moved to Vancouver Canada at age of 18), also garnered a massive 88% positive response from Rotten Tomatoes critics, and a 95% positive response from JoBlo.com readers. The summer’s last would-be event picture, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, wielded its kung fu grip on the box office over the weekend, though it wasn’t quite a real blockbuster hero. With a big movie opening, the weekend as a whole was up 22 percent over the same timeframe last year, when The Dark Knight led for the fourth weekend in a row and Pineapple Express debuted in second.
