Weekend Report: ‘G-Force’ Takes Cake, ‘Potter’ Plummets

Though G-Force and The Ugly Truth opened well, it was another down weekend at the box office. Driven by less compelling new and recent releases, business as a whole was down from last year for the third weekend in a row. The latest HARRY POTTER movie bust out of the gates on Wednesday and has already grossed close to $160M since then! In fact, if you count up its worldwide grosses alongside the North American numbers, the film has already made about $400M across the globe in its first 5 days of release. Not too shabby. Sacha Baron Cohen’s follow-up to the surprise success that was BORAT back in 2006 entitled BRUNO also managed to open at #1 with $30M in its opening weekend, compared to BORAT’s $9M opening. That said, BRUNO opened huge on Friday with about half of its total coming on that day ($14M). Most films usually make more on Saturday, but BRUNO only made about $9M on Saturday and even less on Sunday. Read More »

In a clash between dinosaurs and giant robots over Independence Day weekend, the result was a draw… for now, based on studio estimates. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen each weighed in with an estimated $42.5 million. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen sent shock waves with the first mega-blockbuster launch of the year, rocketing to an estimated $112 million over the weekend. With such a massive movie debuting, overall weekend business surged past $200 million, which was up nine percent from the same weekend last year and was a new high for a June weekend. Read More »
