US Box Office Analysis Week 8

America’s favorite cross-dressing granny had no trouble posting bail this weekend as Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail debuted with an impressive $41.1 million, while the cheerleading comedy Fired Up! flamed out in its $6 million premiere. Perry’s latest success-in-a-dress comedy was his fourth number one opener and a career high for the filmmaker, surpassing Madea’s Family Reunion, which opened in 2006 with $30 million.

Meanwhile, last week’s topper Friday the 13th stumbled in its second week out, dropping 81% to sixth place with $7.8 million leaving the sleeper hit Taken to take the weekend’s runner-up position. The Liam Neeson kidnapping thriller added $11.4 million to its $95 million cumulative gross.

Stop-motion animated feature Coraline crept up to the third spot with $11 million ahead of the romantic comedy He’s Just Not That Into You’s $8.54 million.

Slumdog Millionaire rounded out the top five with $8.1 million. Overall, this weekend’s numbers are up 33% from the same time last year when the thriller Vantage Point opened at number one.
